Global Leaders Highlight Indigenous Rights

Indigenous Peoples face severe health inequities and poverty caused by land degradation and systemic exclusion. Experts at the UN are calling for health systems that respect indigenous culture and protect their ancestral lands to improve global well-being.

More than 1,000 people attended the latest session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, a platform that has focused on these communities for 25 years. UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised Indigenous Peoples as essential guardians of nature and leaders in the global effort to protect biodiversity and fight climate change.

Persistent Health and Poverty Gaps

While Indigenous Peoples make up only 6 percent of the global population, they represent nearly 19 percent of the world's extreme poor. Many communities still face significant discrimination and exclusion, which directly impacts their well-being. Regardless of where they live, indigenous groups often experience shorter life expectancies, higher rates of chronic illness, and alarming suicide rates. These health issues are frequently caused by the destruction of their lands and waters, including problems like chemical contamination and climate change.

A Holistic View of Well-being

For many indigenous communities, health is not just about physical or mental status but is deeply tied to their culture, language, and environment. Leaders at the forum called for health systems to be reformed so they recognize these connections. They argued that healthcare should respect the holistic, traditional approaches that Indigenous Peoples have used for generations to maintain their well-being.

The Impact of Conflict and Displacement

The rights of indigenous groups are inseparable from the lands and ecosystems they inhabit. When conflict or displacement occurs, it disrupts their livelihoods, food security, and cultural traditions, all of which put their health at risk. Protecting their ancestral territories and sacred sites is essential for ensuring the long-term health and survival of these communities.
